It may not be decided until December but this year's BBC Sport's Personality of the Year looks like the being the most closely contested ever. Team GB had their most successful Olympics of all time and produced a host of worthy athletes for the shortlist.

Last years and 2013 winner Andy Murray followed up with his second Olympic Gold Medal and his second Wimbledon title and has to be a favourite for 2016. Elsewhere at the Olympics Mo Farah won the 'double double' winning gold for the second time in 5000 and 10,000m and on the cycling track Team GB dominated. Laura Trott win her 3rd and 4th gold at the velodrome, and her fiancee Jason Kenny won his 6th gold medal to match Chris Hoy's impressive medal tally. In swimming Adam Peaty won gold and beat the world record in the 100m breaststroke. Alistair Brownlee was looking good to be a strong contender after his traithlon gold but since helping his brother across the finish line at the World Series Final he's looking positively heroic.

Not all sport happened at the Olympics. At Euro 16 Gareth Bale lead the underdogs Wales to the semi-finals and how can we forget Jamie Vardy's fairy tale story with Premier League winning Leicester City.

Whoever wins in December it will be a great tribute to a fantastic year of sport.
